A LOCAL’S GUIDE TO BRAZIL’S MOST MARVELOUS CITY

Welcome to the city that vibrates to the rhythm of summer, where Havaiana flip flops are the shoe of choice and the beach a sacred pillar of daily life.

Rio de Janeiro is mainly known for its famed urban beaches and forest-clad mountains. But the city that wields its way through this dramatic landscape is also rich in culture and dining. Ready to explore the city nicknamed Cidade Maravilhosa, meaning Marvelous City?

This is the guide I’d send to visiting friends and family after living in the Cidade Maravilhosa for the past year.

WHY GO:

Between Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Rio is home to the most famous stretches of sand on the planet. Whatever the weather or day of the week, you’ll always find someone surfing, sunbathing, or playing volleyball on its beaches.

It’s part of the carioca culture, which is reason alone to visit. Here, life isn’t taken too seriously. Cheery locals have an upbeat energy that’s almost palpable — and it’s not just during Carnaval, the quintessential Brazilian celebration that takes center stage here in Rio.

Then there’s the nature. The forest, mountain, and ocean geographical combo makes Rio a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you want to spend the day on the beach, swim in waterfalls, or hike one of the highest coastal mountains in the world, the city’s landscape delivers.

WHAT TO SEE:

First stop: a visit to Christ the Redeemer. The iconic statue stands at the summit of a 2,000-foot mountain, making it visible from all over city. When you’re up there, you’ll be treated to a postcard view of Rio.

Next, test your fear of heights on the cable car ride to Sugarloaf Mountain. You’ll glide up to yet another summit with picturesque views of Rio’s Guanabara Bay and the Christ himself.

A beach day (or two) is a must. Head to Arpoador to watch the surf, Ipanema to blend in with the locals, and Leblon to people watch.

The true adventurers can tackle the Pedra da Gavea hike, known to be the toughest in the city. The mountain is one of the highest rocks that ends directly in the ocean. For some lighter exercise, cycle around Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, a large lagoon in the middle of the city.

Look beyond Rio’s coastline and spend an afternoon in its historic center. Marvel at the centuries-old books at the Royal Portuguese Reading Room. Then, walk up the colorful Escadaria Selarón, and grab a drink in the bohemian neihgborhood of Santa Teresa.

WHERE TO EAT:

For a post-beach snack — because you’ll need one — go for the tuna sandwich and fresh mango juice at Polis Sucos. Another fantastic option is the pastel de carne (meat empanada) at BB Lanches.

Head to Bazzar in Ipanema for a modern, upscale Brazilian dining experience, where the Mediterranean-influenced menu delivers consistently great dishes like a vegan banana stew and shrimp with black garlic.

Pro Tip: Don’t skip the bread appetizer.

A truly local meal can be found at the perpetually-packed Braseiro da Gávea. Here, order the salty picanha steak for the table, plus a side of broccoli rice, fries, and farofa de banana (a crumby flour mixture often paired with meat or beans). Just nod your head “yes” when the waiter comes around with the sausage skewer.

WHERE TO DRINK:

The national drink is the caipirinha, and you can find it on every menu. They’re best enjoyed at botecos, or Rio’s version of a dive bar. The most famous include Jobi, Belmonte, and Boa Praça, though you can find much humbler venues at virtually every corner street.

WHERE TO SEE:

The beachfront Fasano Hotel is conveniently situated between Arpoador and Ipanema beaches. With ocean-facing rooms and a rooftop pool, the sophisticated Fasano hotel will be an unforgettable base for your Rio vacation.
