About Your Guide

moustafa el-sayed

Chef-Owner, Mombar

Moustafa is somewhat of a local treasure. Emigrating to NYC from Alexandria, Egypt in the early ‘80’s, Moustafa would ultimately make his mark in Astoria, Queens.

What’s partially so fascinating about him is just how multi-dimensional he is. As an engineer, artist and chef, he put all of those skill sets to work when he transformed his computer shoop to open Mombar in 2000.

From the mosaic facade to the trinkets and tables, everything was created or hand-sourced by Moustafa himself. He works selflessly to showcase his Egyptian roots through food and art, and make anyone who enters his doors feel welcome.

About The Business

mombar

25-22 Steinway St, Queens, NY 11103

Located in a pocked of Astoria known as “Little Egypt,” Mombar has been serving traditional Egyptian food to Egyptians and locals alike.

With a large eye adorning the exterior of Mombar, this is a sign of many that this is not going to be your run-of-the-mill dining experience.

Operating as a one-man shop for over 23 years, Mombar’s owner, Moustafa is a gregarioous character who loves to talk about his food, country and art.

A feast for both the eyes and senses, Mombar is a porthole into Egyptian food and culture.
